Representing/Roma/Holocaust: Exhibition Experiences in Europe and East Asia

This article reflects on two exhibitions, in 2018 and 2019, about the Nazi persecution of German Sinti Roma. One was produced by an Anglo-German curatorial team toured Britain Continental Europe. The second designed South Korean curators installed temporarily a gallery downtown Seoul. exhibitions drew same photographic archive, narrated histories Romani subjects photographs, used story their relationship with non-Romani photographer to ask questions responsibility prompt visitors reflect own status as “implicated subjects” contemporary forms discrimination. Given different expectations level knowledge that bring exhibition communicative tools familiar them (the Seoul included creative artists), teams took very approaches informing moving audiences – meeting recognized challenges representing history identity not least ways which exhibition’s message mediated face-to-face conversations site. aesthetic approach adopted did fully succeed maintaining balance between explanation exoticization. evaluation relies visitor surveys (quantitative qualitative) interviews guides.
